The first church in Straits was the Straits Chapel, an
Anglican Church. When the Methodist took it over during
the revolution, it was outgrown in a few years. Land was
given on the West side of Chadwick’s Creek (now
known as Whitehurst Creek) and a new house of worship
was built. It was named Tabernacle Church. By 1890 a larger
church was needed. It was built on the road beside the
Straits school using many of the timbers of the old church.
The preacher lived with members of the congregation until
1900 when land was given for a parsonage. In 1915, a larger
parsonage was built and it serves as a Thrift Shop for
the community today. With the consolidation of schools,
the Straits School Building was left empty. In 1948, the
building was moved and joined to the back of the church
as an educational building. Other renovations were made
to the church: a new steeple and bell, and memorial stained
glass windows. For over 200 years the Straits congregation
has continued its service of worship and helping others.
With our faith in God and our willingness to work, we
are sure it will continue for many years to come.
