A short trip north up Marshallberg Road where it meets
Hwy 70 is the community of Smyrna. It is one of the more
active communities as it is the center of Down East. One
of the three Down East elementary schools is located there
along with Eastern Park and the Crissie Wright Lodge.
Smyrna was born about 1700 but had several names before
the community was christened Smyrna in 1853. Legend has
it that there was once a man named “Smirners”
or “Smunar” who lived at the head of Jarrett’s
Bay.
