This community was once called Witt. It, along with its
neighbors Atlantic and Cedar Island were established in
or before the 16th century. It is difficult to determine
the exact dates due to the fact the few of the people
back then could write and if they could record during
this time would have been easily lost as a result of lack
importance felt at the time and that grave markers were
in the main made of wood due to the lack of availability
of stone in this area.
Sea Level has a great deal to offer its visitors. One
can go camping with an RV or tent at its campground that
is equipped with a boat ramp and a swimming pool.
Nelson Bay affords a gate way to Core Sound and the Core
Banks plus a great fishing, sailing, kayaking, PWC and
swimming plus the most fantastic sunsets you've ever
seen.
There is also a full service banking facility here, an
extended care facility; doctor's office; pharmacy and
a premier retirement center for both worn out and tired
seamen called Snug Harbor at Nelson Bay. Snug Harbor until
recentally was the nation's oldest charitable institution
and houses and displays wonderful if not the best maritime
artifacts and art in the country. Tours are available
by appointment.
