Ward's Creek separates OTWAY, the next community, from
Bettie. Named after one of Carteret County's most famous
inhabitants, Otway Burns, this village of around six hundred
was settled in the 1700's by people who moved from
Straits. Otwegian's are known by the locals for their
sweet potatoes and collards. If you see people in Ward's
Creek with inner tubes and baskets they are clamming or
oystering.
