Near Gloucester, a few miles down Sleepy Creek Road is
the community of Marshallberg. Those living here have
made their living fishing and boat building for generations.
Lying on a peninsula between Sleepy Creek and Core Sound,
this small settlement was known earlier as Deep Hole Point.
During 1828-1834 earth for ramparts of Ft Macon was excavated
from Sleepy Creek leaving a deep hole in the creek bed
and giving Marshallberg its first name. In the 1800's
a more suitable name was needed for a post office being
established there. The residents chose Marshallberg in
honor of Matt Marshall who ran the mailboat from Beaufort
three times a week.
